There is no other way to say it. Most of what I see bores me. There is no magic left that hasn't been sternly dowgraded to illusion, no corner of the earth that hasn't been appraised and pronounced free of its mysteries, no envisioned utopia that hasn't had its foundation yanked from beneath it before the first brick of its structure could be laid, and no fool who hasn't been reprimanded for thinking otherwise. Is it any wonder then that we lead lives of quiet desperation? What with the wide eyed wonder of youth firmly behind us the world can seem a cold place. We simply do not have the time, are overwhelmed, or cannot be bothered to fawn over things the way are forebearers once did. Romance is dead.
We walk around, all of us, with the burden of this knowledge, a condition made all the more irksome by its denial. We cover our ears lest we hear the voice that proclaims: "Look at you, sham that you are." Of course the world throws up a myriad of distractions in the hope of dissuading us of such sentiments. Whole empires have been constructed upon the very principal. But the soul knows better. It hungers for the real, yearns for the one truth that might redeem it from its disquiet. I believe that truth is called Art.
The work that leaves my studio represents an attempt to live up to such ideals, to cast off the pall of maturity that compels us to look through a glass darkly and see through to the place pure and unfettered. It takes its cue from the natural world but is rarely faithful in nature. Many are essentially riffs on forms found in the plant and animal kingdom, or better yet strange artifacts brought back from imagined worlds. The more bizarre the better. I am forever challanging myself in this regard, trying new combinations of shapes and textures in order to evoke this vision.
Hopefully in their viewing a seed is planted, the ideals that died in your youth given cause to stir in their graves. And for those so wise as to purchase a piece of my work I guarentee that good fortune will follow you to the end of your days. Ladybugs will besiege you. Halos will form above your heads. Etc, etc…
